Coracan is the world at the centre of the vast and ancient Primanna cluster. It is home to over five billion human beings and a spiritual ecosystem vastly larger than that. Its surface is covered in steep mountains, vast oceans, endless deserts, rolling plains, rugged tundras and wild jungles and its people are of many diverse cultures, nations and faiths. Human civilisation, beaten down in four separate apocalypses over its 33,000 year history, is once again covering the planet in cities and farmland and radically changing the balance of the ecosystems they depend on.

Etymology

Coracan comes from the ancient Proto word "Corac" meaning dust combined with the "an" suffix to mean a complete and unified body.

Timekeeping

A year on Coracan is 360, 24-hour days, and is the exact same length as an average Earth year (365.2425 days). This year is traditionally divided into eight 45-day months, (which are upset by leap-years) corresponding to the eight constellations of the Coracan zodiac: Janus, Charu, Kadel, Apar, May, Serul, Arum and Okta.

Each day is divided into twenty-four hours, which are subdivided into 60 minutes and 60 seconds for each minute. These seconds are equal to 1.0145625 seconds on Earth.

Pre-history

In the very beginning, there was nothing but Mist. The Mist was separated into the Empty and the Full. The Empty was separated into Void and Fire and the Full into Water and Dust. The Fire became the sun and the stars, the Void became space and the Night, the Water became Coracan's twin planet Serulus and the Dust became Coracan itself.

The Primanna cluster, which Coracan is in the centre of, is known to be billions of years old. The precise age is up for debate, but the consensus is that it is at least 10 billion years old, perhaps far older. Coracan's age, too, is uncertain, but it is thought unlikely to have formed less than five billion years ago.

Start of the Anthropocene (0-3373 Human era)

Humans arrived in the Primanna over 33,000 years ago, bringing with them plants and animals from other worlds. Coracan's native dragons, other animals and purple flora were greatly reduced in range and many native species became extinct. This era became remembered by humanity as the Heroic Era, when humans fought nature and monsters to survive. Historical artefacts are few and far between in this era due to its incredible antiquity with barely any written language of any kind surviving.

Despite this, linguists have managed to reconstruct the most widespread of the early human languages of Coracan, Proto, which is believed to have been the last common ancestor of almost every single living language on the planet today.

This era would come to an end 3,373 years after it began when a final confrontation between humanity and the old spirits of Coracan resulted in a massive acceleration of the warming of the planet. This warming caused the giant glaciers that had covered up much of the planet to recede, large swathes of coastal land to be retaken by the sea and numerous land bridges submerged for the rest of the anthropocene.

Golden, Classical and Silver eras (3373-28,975 Human era)

Over the next twenty-five thousand a pattern emerged on the scale of millennia of birth, growth, greatness and apocalypse. The Golden Era is the first era from which substantial written records survive. This period of nearly three thousand years is commonly the set of myth and legend.

Coracan's longest era, the 16,000-year-long Classical Era is sometimes regarded as the high-water mark of civilisation on Coracan, even surpassing the technological achievements of the present. While shaky, estimates of the population at the end of this era range in excess of 1 billion. Regardless of what the population was, the evidence for large-scale urban settlements, resource extraction and ecological footprint at levels rivalling or exceeding today is undeniable. Ischerite, known for its property to store memory in crystalline form, has an unknown chemical makeup and is believed to have invented in this period.

The method for the creation of Ischerite, which generations of chemists over the millennia have tried in vain to replicate, and the great civilisation of the Classical Era was wiped out in mere hours in a cataclysmic human war. In this war, known as the Sagambel, many Primanna dreamworlds were torn from their foundations and hurled at the planet, killing many and covering the planet in massive dreambleeds that would take centuries to heal. Shattered remnants of dreamworlds from this era and before form the Shattered Ring in the Primanna, while some dreambleeds from the brief war have persisted through to the present.

Following the Sagambel, which remains the most devastating of all Coracan's apocalypses, humanity eventually regrouped and began the Silver Era. Despite picking up the pieces of the old time humanity in this era lived in the shadow of their forebears.

The Silver Era was ended by a war against a human warlord called Mrotdal, who had possessed the body of a dragon and amassed a large army of humans and spirits, promising to bring his followers into a utopic Coracan once the old order had been swept away. While Mrotdal was eventually defeated, a century of warfare once again ravaged the planet.

Early Iron era (0-3811 Fa)

The current era began with a fifth stone age. This era has seen a slow decline in dreamwalking knowledge and spirituality among humans.

Early modern history (3811-4241 Fa)

An age of discovery began in the early 3800s, during the time of Casarad Mulin, revered as a Cruxi saint. There was a renewed interest in studying the past and the workings of reality in a scientific and logical manner.

In the 3830s, Casarad Mulin earned her revered status by spearheading an effort to prevent the imprisoned Mrotdal from causing another apocalypse, thus allowing further technological innovation. Vast swathes of the world unconnected for millennia were finally mapped and explored and contact between all the peoples of Coracan reestablished. Great societal changes also swept the planet, such as nationalism, popular sovereignty, secularism and republicanism. Rapid industrialisation and agricultural revolution resulted in massive urbanisation and the advent of consumer goods.

Modern history (4238-present/33,295 Fa)

Coracan's modern history begins in 4238, with the launch of the planet's first artificial satellite that year starting their Space Race. Many countries launched their own space programs, eager to prove the superiority of their own nations and ideologies. Over time, two different factions developed: the authoritarian Eupatriots and the democratically-inclined Coalition.

The first human to orbit Coracan was Ceran Torridotter on 25 Apar 4241. However, it was not until 4249 that the first successful manned mission to Serulus caused tensions to boil over. Expansionist nationalist countries eyed up their neighbours while those same neighbours desperately looked for allies to aid their defence.

In 4251, the Panthalassa War, began. It was a devastating worldwide conflict which resulted in over a hundred million deaths, mostly civilians. Millions of people were slaughtered in industrialised genocides and nuclear weapons were used for the first time to bring an end to the war.

The Coalition victory resulted in a complete reset of Coracan's political systems. Eupatriot governments were replaced with democracies, borders redrawn and a new, global government was established. This organisation became known as the Conglomerate States and was established to promote peace and communication between nations.

Politics

The highest level of government on Coracan is the Conglomerate States, of which all 91 sovereign states on Coracan are a member of. This organisation has a standing military and the power to tax its members. The CS is highly interventionist and CS armed forces have been known to fight both sides of a civil war in order to establish a peaceful CS Condominium and enforce a transition to democracy.

All CS member states are fully sovereign and have full control over their own defence, domestic and foreign policies, but international law supersedes national laws. Representatives from all of Coracan's sovereign states meet in the CS capital of Pentapolis, a planned international city built in the aftermath of the Panthalassa War.

Demographics

Population

Coracan's population growth has not been even throughout its history. Due to the cycle of apocalypse, population has followed a saw-tooth pattern for the last 33,000 years, declining massively after each major disaster and rebuilding in between.

In the current era, advances in medicine and technology began to make an impact three hundred years ago. Food production increased due to improved agricultural techniques, allowing populations to boom. By the 4100s, the steam engine caused a period of rapid industrialisation and urbanisation on the planet. As medicine advances enough to combat infant mortality and curb plague, population growth massively increased. This growth in population growth, interrupted by the demographically disastrous Panthalassa War, peaked in 4273 at 1.8% per year for the planet. A combination of high birth rates from returning veterans starting families, lower infant mortality than ever before and mass birth control methods yet to be implemented resulted in a distinctly large generation of individuals now aged between 40-60 who are known as 'Baby Boomers'.

From its peak in 4273, population growth has declined rapidly as more of the planet is educated, and has access to adequate transport, sanitary and medical facilities. Since peak population growth, Coracan's human population has more than doubled from 2.5 billion to 5.1 billion as of 4320. The most recent billion milestone was on the 11th of Apar 4317, when the population of the planet reached five billion.

Religion

The people of Coracan hold a wide range of religious beliefs or lack thereof. There are five major religions, in order of population size from smallest to greatest they are: Sanokism, Anakism, Katri, Dayutra, Taiana, Jie and Cruxi.

Geography

The six continents of Coracan:      Pachan      Asna      Eyo      Torica      South Saldur      North Saldur

Independent sovereign nations claim the entirety of Coracan's surface. No sovereign government has ever controlled the entire world, although some nation-states have tried and failed to achieve world domination.

The Conglomerate States is a worldwide intergovernmental organisation that serves as a platform for peaceful conflict resolution and a platform for international diplomacy and international law.

Metageography

In Coracan, there is a layer of reality called the metasphere. Experiences and memories have an impact in the areas they are formed and last for varying periods. Metabeings are created by collective belief. Other metaorganisms help in the process of dreaming. Id are also prevalent in Coracan, especially since the Panthalassa War, causing unexplained disappearances and phenomena.

Elemental significance

Main article: Primanna Elementalism

The Primanna is made up of four distinct elements: Water/Flow, Fire, Dust and Void. Coracan is considered to be the Dust Nexus of the Primanna and the centre of elemental Dust energy.
