The Union military was founded in 201 BDR as the Revolutionary Army of Malisk as an army of workers trained and reinforced by defecting troops from the Eteno Star Empire. During the Golden Revolution it expanded into a full military force with its own traditions and organization. When the war ended and the UESS was proclaimed, the majority of units absorbed from the Star Empire were renamed and converted to prevent any imperial heritage from taking root in the armed forces.

General of the Staff Groichak R. C. Chimady led the post-war reform of the revolutionary forces, renaming it the Military Forces of the Union of Eteno Socialist States and establishing six of the seven modern branches. The intelligence branch would only be added after the Buyuk Wars.

In 168 BDR, Chimady's reforms were fully implemented, which left the UESS with a large military whose active troops were routinely re-assigned and re-deployed all over the Union to improve cross-training and expertise as well as to prevent the growth of strong loyalties or local affiliations among military units, which had reduced the efficiency of the Star Empire's forces in the last war. The Union could also rely on a massive reserve complement, as all Eteno, Zhpalya, Lapakhe, and Etekan adults were obligated to attend training and refresher activities with local units several times per year.

The Buyuk Wars began shortly after in 135 BDR, lasting until 10 BDR. The UESS spent most of the war on the defensive, fighting in their own systems and suffering hundreds of billions of casualties over the course of the conflict. The military became closely integrated with the rest of the government, and developed efficient processes for inducting, training, and deploying vast amounts of troops to reinforce and replace its consistently immense losses. Military concerns were the paramount interest of the government to the point where there was practically no economic or political activity not directly related to the war effort except for the provision of subsistence agriculture and basic goods.

In 2 and 1 BDR, the military conducted Strategic Operation 7105 with the forces of the Karalian Empire, committing all of their combined reserves in a major offensive through Buyuk space by way of the lightly-guarded Karalian-Buyuk frontier. The invasion was timed to correspond with a two-week maintenance shutdown of Infra, the enigmatic superturing who usually controlled Buyuk forces. Using new technologies, equipment, tactics, and electronic warfare systems held secretly for such an offensive, the combined forces plunged deep into Buyuk territories and destroyed numerous important facilities and concentrations of military units. They reached Domum Regimen two days before Infra's re-awakening and fought a battle to secure the station. This enabled first contact with numerous new allied races, resulting in a renewed offensive against the Buyuk.

By 2 ADR, Infra had gone into hiding and the main Buyuk threat was crippled. As the military began downsizing, releasing many of its troops from service and selling off or stockpiling old stores of equipment, the Union Civil War began out of the Groos War, a conflict which engulfed the Union for five years until 7 ADR.

As the UESS recovered and re-organized, the attempted reforms of 2 ADR were restarted under the new government with some changes. Almost 60% of personnel were discharged by 9 ADR, with a third of the Navy's remaining ships and almost half of the land forces' equipment removed from service. The Directorate for Military Intelligence was formed as a branch of the military, and mandatory service in the Union was completely overhauled. In the coming decades additional reforms would seek to further professionalize and modernize the armed forces. The Navy received extra attention in the modernization programs. In 15 ADR, 94% of ships in active service were built during the Buyuk Wars. By 30 ADR, only 32% of the fleet consisted of Buyuk-era ships, and of these legacy ships, over two-thirds received a major reconstruction or upgrade package at a shipyard. Although the Navy was a major priority, the land forces had not been neglected. in 15 ADR, 87% of equipment in service with the land forces had been manufactured during the Buyuk Wars, and in 30 ADR this number was 42%.

The modern Military Forces of the UESS are a considerable power with a strong reserve component and the ability to forward deploy in strength for an extended period of time. Although in its modern form it is much smaller as countless Buyuk-era units have been removed, combined, or downsized, it is a far more professional and uniformly trained and equipped service.
