Kan Kai Na, officially the Sovereign Order of Kan Kai Na, is an island city state.
The Sovereign Order of Kan Kai Na was founded in 691 Fa. According to legend, the then Bull of Darana funded an expedition westwards, through the equatorial Nokola'I archipelago to the continent of Pachan. This group was a mercenary organisation that the Daranese Imperial Republic relied upon to fight their wars. In exchange for their services, the Order, at the time a Military Order, was granted sovereignty by the Daranese. The Military Order held a formidable presence in many areas. There was an older legend that an Old Worlder called Davalca had set up a kingdom there before the last apocalypse. According to this legend, he had gathered all the remnants of all the previous waves of human habitation and managed to preserve and collect a wealth of knowledge lost to the Old World. It was thought that his kingdom survived the most recent apocalypse. It was also thought that his kingdom possessed an unimaginable quantity of gold and silver and contained a land where nuggets of gold lay mere centimetres in the ground At this time, the Imperial Republic of Darana was struggling to fund the Military Order and the mercenaries surrounded the city of Darana with their navy (they also took several other islands), demanding payment.
In what was probably one of the greatest surprise moments in history, the Daranese Bull gave the Sovereign Military Order as much gold as they could gather within the city. The Bull convinced the Grand Master of the order to use the gold to make an expedition westwards, to try to find Davalca's Kingdom. According to contemporary sources, as many as half of the Order may have packed up to go on this expedition. Some sources claim that a sort of frenzy followed as news of the expedition spread across the old world and groups independent of the Kan Kai Na may have gone westwards.
The expedition was disastrous for all involved. The Kan Kai Na lost many of their ships and many groups left to go back home. However, the Grand Master survived and continued to hold on to the gold. He was still committed as ever to finding Davalca's kingdom. But, deprived of manpower, he bought some islands from the Nokola'I Conglomeration from which to form a new base of operations. He did eventually land on Pachan proper and headed inland, in search of Davalca. But the Grand Master and his entourage never returned.
The remnant of the Kan Kai Na left in the west founded the city of Kaigan.
Since the end of the Panthalassa War, Kan Kai Na has experienced a near-continuous economic boom.
Kan Kai Na has a capitalist mixed service economy, characterised by low taxation, minimal government market intervention, and an established international financial market. Kan Kai Na's economy has a huge income disparity.
It has little arable land and few natural resources, importing most of its food and raw materials. Imports account for more than 90 percent of Kan Kai Na's food supply, including nearly all its meat and rice.
Although the territory had one of Pachan's largest manufacturing economies during the latter half of the 4100s, Kan Kai Na's economy is now dominated by the service sector. The sector is 92.7 percent of economic output, with the public sector accounting for about 10 percent.
Between 4261 and 4300, Kan Kai Na's gross domestic product multiplied by a factor of 180 and while per-capita GDP increased by a factor of 93.
Tourism is a major part of the economy, accounting for seven percent of GDP. In 4316, 24.9 million visitors contributed ₾25.9 billion to the order, making Kan Kai Na the 16th most popular destination for tourists.
Kan Kai Na has a highly developed, sophisticated transport network. Over 85 percent of daily trips are made on public transport, the second-highest percentage in the world.
The Rail Mass Transit System (RMTS) is an extensive passenger rail network, connecting 95 metro stations throughout the territory. With a daily ridership of over five million, the system serves 41 percent of all public-transit passengers in the city and has an on-time rate of 99.9 percent.
Although public-transport systems handle most passenger traffic, there are over 500,000 private vehicles registered in Kan Kai Na. Vehicle traffic is extremely congested in urban areas, exacerbated by limited space to expand roads and an increasing number of vehicles. More than 16,000 taxicabs, easily identifiable by their bright pink colour, are licensed to carry riders in the city-state. The Kaigan-Pamana Bridge creates a direct route to the Pachan mainland through Pamana.
Kaigan International Airport is the territory's primary airport. Over 100 airlines operate flights from the airport, including locally based Kaigan Airlines (flag carrier). It is the ninth-busiest airport by passenger traffic, and handles the most air-cargo traffic in the world.
The Orderly Ferry operates two lines across Sovereign Harbour for its 49,000 daily passengers. Ferries also serve outlying islands inaccessible by other means. Smaller boats serve the most remote coastal settlements. Ferry travel to Macau and mainland Pachan is also available.
